Ferulic acid

Introduction

Ferulic acid is a derivative of cinnamic acid (cinnamic acid), chemically known as 4-hydroxy-methoxy cinnamic acid. Ferulic acid is a kind of phenolic acid widely existed in plant kingdom. It has many health functions, such as scavenging free radicals, anti-thrombosis, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory, inhibiting tumor, preventing hypertension, heart disease, enhancing sperm motility and so on. Ferulic acid has good antioxidant activity, which has a strong scavenging effect on hydrogen peroxide, superoxide free radical, hydroxyl free radical, and nitroso peroxyated. It can regulate physiological functions, inhibit the production of free base enzymes, and increase the activity of free radical scavenging enzymes. It also works in concert with other antioxidants to increase its efficacy. Ferulic acid's antioxidant activity was enhanced by UV exposure, suggesting it may help protect skin from sun damage.
